is it school yet?

Well the holidays are over and things should be settling down yet Josh and I are still not back to our normal routine. This last week when everyone else was getting back to "normal" work and schoolwise we found ourselves running errands to help out others and then when we started a routine day on Friday it SNOWED here in Las Vegas! Well I tell you that when it snows here you have to take full advantage of it so we did. We spent most of the day in and out of the house playing in it, walking around the neighborhood just enjoying the falling snow, sledding and building snow angels and snowmen too. :) Life goes on so they say and so does his learning even when at times like these that I fear otherwise. Lifeskills are important and you can't help but learn when watching the Discovery and History channels and reading science books are what you do for fun.

The pictures Steve put up on the site for me are from the WWI study we did using the book The Summer Soldiers. The other picture is of a little unit we did in the beginning of December for Pearl Harbor. The pictures are of the USS Arizona and Memorial in Hawaii that I took when I was about 8 and living there with my family.

We are gearing up for this next term and are trying to figure out what we want to study. I thought we had science and history planned out but now I'm thinking we may go in a different direction. At least I have the fine arts outlined as we are using Ambleside Online suggestions.I'll put those at the end of the post so you can see what we are studying if you are interested. We are also using Julie Bogart's Arrow subscription and new free Brave Writer Lifestyle programs for Language Arts. If you're not familiar with this you should take a look. She is fantastic! I even won a copy of her book for being a Brave Writer Mom and making the first response post to her blog that she has set up to go along with the program. She is an amazing writer herself and an unbelievably wise homeschooling mom who is sharing her talents with parents who may feel lost when trying to teach our children the art of writing. There is a link to her website in the links section.

Right now we are reading Homer Price by Robert McCloskey. Not really a classic but we are enjoying it nonetheless. We will also be reading a few stories from Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories for Julie's Arrow subscription.

Next week will be a short week since they will be leaving for Salt Lake for ice hockey championship games early Thursday morning and won't get back until late Monday night.

Well here's a look at our fine arts for this term:

Poet - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Composer - medieval era music
Artist - Giotto di Bondone
Plutarch - Timoleon
Shakespeare - Much Ado About Nothing
