where has the time gone?

Wow I couldn't believe it's been so long since I last posted on here. This time of year is always hectic as I still have one daughter in high school who goes to a local public school. That's one of the perks with homeschooling, you are on your own schedule not someone else's.

Josh and I have been emeshed in birding lately. He just finished another adult book called Kingbird Highway by Kenn Kaufman. It still amazes me watching him read such books and remembering back when he was 8 and I despaired that he would ever learn to read at all. Now if I could only feel that security with his writing lol. All in good time I guess.

We have taken a few trips with the local Red Rock Audubon group and have had a great time. The people are so accepting of Josh and willing to share their expertise. We are looking forward to a trip out to the Bird Preserve to bird with a staff member on Friday. Hopefully the heat here in Las Vegas will cool down some by then lol. This weekend we took a quick camping trip up to Mt. Charleston and he had a great time checking out the birds up there that we don't usually get down here in the valley.

We are winding down our year. I have reminded him though we will still continue to review and such with math, writing, and penmanship. They may be part of just our everday living experiences or a more structured learning but no matter how we incorporate them it's important to practice and not lose these skills.

Julee,

Good luck with the move. Soon huh? Josh is very jealous of your move to Texas. He says they have some of the best birding in the US. lol The Audubon group has been really great. Very patient with Josh as well as impressed by him.

We were lucky enough to go around with one of the women from the Audubon group on Friday at the bird preserve because she is also on staff there. It was just us and her and we learned so much from her. He is looking forward to more birding this weekend and during the next week.

You'll have to let us know aht you learn in Texas. :)

Barb,
I wonder if you and Josh have figured out how to feed and attract doves, sparrows, finches, etc., without getting the pigeons. I was okay the first week in this new house...was able to put seed out and get lots of pretty little birds. Then the pigeons discovered it and they chase everyone else away and poop all over everything. I found a feeder on line that I might order that allows smaller birds to feed but not the pigeons. I also found that Target sells National Audobon Society bird seed. They have one that is just for finches, and I've been told other birds don't like it. I might try that, but I hate to leave the sparrows, doves, and mockingbirds out. Any suggestions?

Kat,

Josh recommends this site:

http://www.wildbirds.com/feeding_pigeons.htm

as they have some suggestions but basically if you want to feed the birds you have to deal with the pigeons (rock doves). He just bought Nyger thistle and filled our tube feeder. We had already moved the feeder from our patio to the backyard wall because of the mess. The rock doves are STILL coming around even though they don't tend to eat Nyger thistle. We still put out regular bird seed too but just small amounts and in places scattered in the backyard where seeds and poop can "fall" and not make too much of a mess.We have found that in making small piles of seed (on rocks and such) the rock doves eat at one and the sparrows at another. The tubular backyard feeder sits above my fairy garden for example. Hopefully the fairies don't mind too much :)

We also put up a sugar water (hummingbird) feeder and if you pop a flower or two off then the finches will "drink" from it too. We have had both hummingbirds and finches come to this feeder.

Sorry we couldn't be of more help. Good luck. What birds have you seen in your new yard?
