Birthday Wall and Classical music site

The other day Josh and I were learning a little about Aaron Copland for our Birthday Wall as it was his birthday (Nov.14). As I searched around the internet for some info and audio to listen to I came upon a wonderful site. I don't know why I was surprised to see it as I have known about it before and then lost it in the never ending longgggg list of favorites I have. Does that ever happen to you? lol We enjoyed listening to a few of the programs they had on Copland and his music.

Later I went back and searched around some to acquaint myself with the site again and was excited to find programs on Beethoven who is the composer we are studying this term as suggested by Ambleside Online. There are lesson plans for various ages, audio to listen to some of his music as well as activity sheets and even games. What a gold mine!

I had to smile as I enjoyed all I was encountering and couldn't help but be a little bit proud as this site is sponsored by a radio station from "back home", Cincinnati, OH.

Hope someone else finds this site as helpful as I do:

Superboy and I have been wondering how you get your information who is on your birthday wall. I mean, how do you know who's birthday is in each month? Is there a calendar or website you use? Or do you have to figure it out on your own?

Right now I am hoarding my last can of chili from the children.

Hi dominion family and fellow Buckeye :) It's so nice that you stopped by. Ok, see, midwest kind of thing, dangling participle. I had to laugh about the can of chili. I have a friend visiting from home in a couple of weeks and she asked what to bring. Of course cans of Skyline chili were top on the list. I do have a bunch of packages of the dry Cinti style chili mix which helps some. lol I so love the Ambleside ring as there are many wondderful, intelligent families sharing all they do. Hope to see you here again. BTW, I already had your blog as a favorite on my computer :)

Hi mom2one,

Nice to see you here. I read the entries on your blog and had to smile about the symphony post. As we just listened to Copland and are studying Beethoven it sounded like a wonderful opportunity you had. Thanks so much for posting about the Thanksgiving pieces you mentioned. I wil be looking into those for us to read. Hope to see you here again :)

Theresa,

The birthday wall entries include birthdays (dates) of people and famous events. They come from various places, such as:

http://www.enchantedlearning.com

Scroll down to Monthly Activity Calendar and click on it.

http://www.holidays.net

Scroll down to the Daily Holidays on the left and click on Fun and Wacky Daily Holidays.

I also have a VERY old book I got, I think the publication date is early 1970's, called The Teacher's Almanack, A Complete Guide to Every Day of the School Year by Dana Newmann which is a goldmine of information for each month including quotes etc.

I look up each person or event in encyclopedias or on the internet and do just a short study of it and then include a caption and picture on the wall.

We have alot of fun with it and it's amazing how much Josh retains from it. Sometimes these will actually spin off into something we study such as the Boer War did recently.

Hope this helps explain it.
